It’s exactly 2 months till THE BIG DAY!  AKA, my daughter’s wedding day.  She’s our first child to get married and I haven’t planned a wedding since my own….almost 24 years ago.  We’re all SUPER excited and we’re in SERIOUS “planning mode”.  Each week we are checking things off the “to-do” list and it all seems to be coming together nicely.

To cut costs, we’re doing most of the food and decorating ourselves.  And by “ourselves” I mean with plenty of help from extended family and close friends.  Over the next week or so, I’d like to share with you some of the things we’ve been planning and “practicing” for the big day.  Starting today with these Easy Chalkboard Signs for the reception.

When asked what she’d like for the reception, my daughter’s response was no surprised to anyone…..

Coffee Bar

After a little thought, we realized it wouldn’t be that difficult to pull off and it would be the perfect “pass time” while our guests wait for the bride and groom to take pictures after the ceremony.  With the help of a couple of friends who work/have worked at a coffee shop we’ve got it all planned out.

We plan to offer a variety of iced coffees and lattes (since it’s late July in Texas) and Italian Cream Sodas for those “non-coffee” drinkers.  Now all we needed was a cute way to let everyone know what flavor they could order.

In keeping with the coffee bar theme, we decided on hand written Chalkboard Signs.  So, my daughter and I headed off to our local Michael’s to get supplies.

There, we found the perfect chalkboards and the Sharpie Paint Markers.

We chose a variety of the Oil Based Markers.  My daughter, who is the artist, loved that they came in so many different colors and tip sizes.  She also like the fact that they write on virtually any surface, are resistant to water, fading and abrasion…which allowed us to do our project well in advance without worrying about what it will look like on the big day.  She’s so creative and was able to “free hand” the writing.  However, if you’re more like me, stop by the stencil aisle and pick up a couple to help with the lettering.  The good news is, according to my daughter, the “chalkboard” style isn’t supposed to be perfect.

We chose colors that would represent the syrup flavors we will be serving and making the Chalkboard Signs was as easy as 1…2….3…

Here’s What We Did:

Step 1:

Make a template of white paper to sketch the design on

Step 2:

Sketch the letters and design on the paper to make sure everything will fit and is properly spaced.

This can be done free-hand or using stencils

Step 3:

Use the Sharpie Oil Based Paint Markers to write on the chalkboards

Quick-drying so no smearing!

Of course, we had to try out a soda and latte….just to make sure they were good!

We loved the way these turned out and can’t wait to show them off at the wedding.

One more thing off the “to-do” list!

Be sure to check your local newspaper and online for Michael’s coupons while supplies last.

This is such a cute idea! I wouldn’t have thought to use the paint markers on the chalkboard but it is a great way to get the project done ahead of time! Congratulations on your daughter getting married! That is so exciting!!
