French Dip 27

I first shared this French Dip Sandwich recipe at Just Us Four.

Thank you Arby’s for introducing me to my good friend the French Dip Sandwich!  As a picky teen, I didn’t like hamburgers…I know “teen” and “didn’t like hamburgers” don’t normally go in the same sentence….but it was nevertheless true.

For that reason, I only liked a couple of fast food places, Arby’s and Chick-fil-a….which worked out just fine.  There was an Arby’s right by my school and Chick-fil-a was the only fast food at the mall (this was before the days of the “food court”).  Perfect….the two places my best friend, Beth, and I spent most of our time!

I’ve continued to love French Dip Sandwiches for years now and have them at other restaurants whenever I can.  I share this love with my oldest daughter.

As with most things we really enjoy, I try to find a way to make them at home.  This French Dip recipe is a super easy crock pot recipe!  I make it often on busy days.  It can be served with a salad, veggie or chips…if you’re really pressed for time.  My daughter and I always dip it in the au jus, my son and husband prefer it with A-1 sauce and my middle daughter prefers to eat the roll and meat separately.

Here’s the Recipe:

  • 3 lb boneless beef roast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 large onion (or 2 medium)
  • 3 cups small button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • French style rolls or hoagie buns
  • Provolone cheese – optional

French Dip 42

Cut onions into thick slices

Sprinkle roast with salt and pepper and place in crock pot

Add all other ingredients and cook on low 10-12 hrs or high 5-6 hrs

French Dip 35

When meat is done remove from liquid and shred

Preheat broiler. Place sliced rolls, cut side up on a large baking sheet

Place meat on bottom half of roll and top with cheese (if desired)

Broil 3-4 minutes or until cheese has melted and bread toasted

French Dip 55

Serve with au jus for dipping

French Dip 01

Just for the record….I now LOVE hamburgers!
