Homeschool End of the Year Party

June 4, 2014Danita

What do Homeschoolers do on the last day of the school year?

We’ve just completed our TENTH year of homeschooling.  I just had to count that twice because I can’t believe it’s been that long….OK, there are some days that it seems every bit that long and much more.

Over the years we’ve gotten plenty of questions about homeschooling, most often occurring when we are out in public in the middle of the day on a “school” day.

Some frequently asked questions:

“Are you out of school today?” (usually in the above mentioned scenario)

“Do you do your classes online?”

“Does your mom teach all your subjects?”

“How do you make friends?”

“Do you like it?”

and my favorite and very frequently asked….

“Do you do school all year round?”

I have always found this question quite baffling.  Why are we asked this?  Do we look like we should do school all year long?  I hope not!

In case you’re wondering….the answer is a very firm NO!  I NEED A BREAK!!!!!

Not only are we taking the summer off, but this year we had an end of the year “field day and party” on the last day of school…although it looks a little different from what you might expect.

Here’s what our Homeschool End of the Year Party looked like…

Several months ago we purchased season tickets to the Ballet, and our last performance just happened to fall on the “last day of school”

Another activity was planned with the “little brother” and he was dropped off with Dad

(because there are laws against “cruel and unusual punishment” – which is what the nail salon would have been for him)

First, my daughters and I drove to our favorite nail salon, which just happens to offer student discounts

last day of school 046

Spent as much time as we needed picking out our nail color….because we could…it was before lunch on Friday!

last day of school

Politely accepted the offer of “something to drink”

Enjoyed our “Cokes” while getting Mani-Pedi

Stayed as long as it took under the nail dryers because NO ONE was waiting for them

last day of school 056

Before getting into the car, took a fun picture of everyone’s toes

last day of school 058

Went back by Dad’s office to get the little brother…and while we were there got Dad to take a picture of everyone’s lovely nails

Went home to eat a late lunch/early dinner because we were going out later for DESSERT!

Careful planning is required when saving room for dessert

last day of school 063

Got dressed up for going out

last day of school 071

We purchased a Groupon for Simply Fondue, conveniently located down the street from Bass Performance Hall (where the ballet would be)

Ordered three serving of chocolate… because there were three of us

They continue to bring you things to dip as long as you have chocolate…after three trips to the kitchen our waiter finally told them…

“It’s girls… eating chocolate, load up the plate!”

 last day of school 001

Attended a long awaited performance of the ballet Swan Lake

Made a special memory of the last day of school this year!

Ok, technically it was supposed to be the last day of school…but we took some extra time off earlier in the year so we have a few more days…

but I promise, we will NOT be doing school ALL Summer!

I’m going to being homeschooling next year and I haven’t even thought of making the last day special. Thanks for bringing these little things to light about homeschooling! I really appreciate it!

What a great way to spend the last day of school. People like to comment on what every thing even if it’s none of their business, heck that’s when they comment the most.

Yes, but I will say we had a little bit of a hard time finding it the first time we went. We were a little confused when we didn’t see it right away, but then again, directions are not my strength. Thanks for stopping by!

What a great last day of school! I get asked the social question all the time of my 4 year old daughter because she has never been to daycare and doesn’t go to preschool yet (although I am teaching her at home and debating homeschooling she’s suppose to start preschool in the fall). As others stated, she around other kids all the time.

I love that you picked an event that requires getting “dressed up.” People don’t do enough of that anymore. Sounds like an amazing day.

I left a reply while on my cell, but I don’t think it ever went through! If it did, I just wanted you to know that I’m not completely crazy! 🙂

What a fun way to end the school year! I love the ballet and I think you and your daughters look so pretty all dressed up!

My daughter homeschools her 4 boys and she always gets asked if she’s concerned about their social life. They take music lessons, play all different kinds of sports, attend church and are constantly out and about trying new experiences. They are some of the most social people I know. Not to mention how well behaved they are! And they really love being homeschooled.

Enjoy your summer with your beautiful family!
