Texas Burgers

A couple of months ago we celebrated our nine-year anniversary as Texans.  It seems as though we’re still unpacking and at the same time we feel like we’ve lived here most of our lives.  Well, for some (my son) it actually has been most of his life.

There are many things we love about living here and it only seemed appropriate to share them along with this wonderful Texas Burgers recipe.

  1. The people are friendly and accepting of “outsiders”.  See, Texas embraces those who move here.  If you live in or ever have lived in Texas, you’re automatically a Texan and no matter what you do or where you go, that never changes.
  2.  Texans are a proud bunch.  People who live here are very proud of their state and it’s actually quite contagious.  There’s just something exciting about telling people you’re “from Texas”.  They tend to get excited too.
  3.  Pretty much everything IS bigger in Texas.
  4. DFW (Dallas-Ft. Worth) is NOT one city.  There is a distinct dividing line and it’s important to know which side of that line you live on.  Just FYI, we live on the Ft. Worth side… where the west begins.
  5.  Everyone in Texas does NOT own a horse, although we have seen a guy on horseback in the drive-thru line at Starbucks, in the city limits of Ft. Worth.
  6.  There ARE a significant number of Texans (probably just as many women as men) who “carry”.  So when they say, “Don’t Mess With Texas!” they’re not kidding!
  7. Cowboy boots ARE appropriate footwear for any occasion.
  8. “BBQ” = Brisket, end of discussion!
  9. A favorite springtime activity is pulling over on the side of the highway, sitting in a patch of Bluebonnets and taking pictures.
  10. It’s very open, flat…and well… brown.  Once you get used to it and return to someplace east of the Mississippi, you can experience a little claustrophobia.

Texas Burgers were adapted from Weber’s Big Book of Burgers, which I bought my husband for Christmas.

Here’s the Recipe:

  • 2 lb ground chuck (80% lean)
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Pepper-Jack cheese
  • dill pickles
  • BBQ sauce
  • shredded lettuce
  • hamburger buns – large

Texas Burgers

In a large pan or bowl combine meat and spices

Mix well….you have to use your hands

Texas Burgers

Form into 5 large patties, about 3/4 inch thick  (or 6 if you want medium)

Using thumb or back of spoon, make a shallow indention about 1 inch wide in the center of each burger

(This helps prevent them from forming a dome as they cook)

These are best when grilled over direct medium-high heat….

However, I did these on a weeknight and our “Grill-master” wasn’t home from work.  We have a charcoal grill and it’s kinda my husband’s thing….

Anyway, I cooked these on the griddle inside and they were still great!

Just before burgers are done, toast the buns

When burgers are done, top with one slice of cheese each and allow it to melt before taking off the grill

Texas Burgers

Build your burger…lettuce, patty, BBQ sauce, pickles

My favorite side dish for burgers is of course, french fries.  However, this time I served them with baked beans and roasted veggies.

Serve extra BBQ on the side!

Had to laugh at your “Texas list” – but the burgers are no laughing matter. Great food no matter which state you hale from, or live in.
