Dark Chocolate Dipped Clementines with Sea Salt
I first saw this recipe for Dark Chocolate Dipped Clementines with Sea Salt on Pinterest, posted by Delightfully Yum. Her pictures were so amazing I just had to give it a try.
Now, as much as I may enjoy trolling Pinterest and looking at all the lovely recipes there I’m often a little “gun-shy” about trying them. See, my first couple of experiences with Pinterest were disasters with a capital D! Seriously, it was bad!
I think I’ll tell you about one today and save the other for another time….
The first was maybe three years ago. I saw this amazing looking picture on Facebook of bite-sized cheese balls. When I clicked, it took me to Pinterest and a recipe using cut up string cheese, rolled in bread crumbs, and baked at 450 for 8-10 minutes. Anyone else see those?
Ok, my better judgement told me, “If I put small bites of cheese into a very hot oven for 8-10 minutes I’m going to have a mess on my hands”. But this pin was all over the place, so I figured, “Why not?” I was having some ladies from church over so I figured this would be the perfect time.
I don’t normally try new recipes for “company” but this one sounded easy and yummy so I did….Then I remembered WHY I don’t usually do this….
BAD IDEA…….REALLY BAD IDEA!
My friend, Jennifer, had arrived early and happened to be there when I took them out of the oven….mere minutes before everyone else was to arrive.
I wish I had pictures but it was way before I started this blog and had never taken (or seen the point in taking) a food picture. Just take my word for it when I tell you IT WAS A MESS! Cheese melted and stuck to the pan beyond any recognition of the loveliness that had been on Pinterest. People were coming to my house any minute and I had this pan full melted mozzarella in my hand.
After a brief moment of panic, Jennifer and I decided the other snack I had would be enough and we ate some of the toasted cheese off the pan before people began to arrive. I was thankful I had gotten the cheese sticks on sale for only twenty-five cents each and I had the bread crumbs already on hand.
When the ladies arrived we all got a laugh out of it because there was no hiding them. My kitchen and living area are very open and it was too late and they were too hot to do anything with, so there they sat on top of the stove for all the world to see.
I was very traumatized and it took me a long time to try another Pinterest idea, but that’s a story for another day.
Thankfully, these Dark Chocolate Dipped Clementines with Sea Salt are super easy and pretty much impossible to mess up. They have just the right amount of chocolate to satisfy a chocolate craving while remaining guilt-free. Clementines are readily available at most grocery stores right now and these only took a couple of minutes to whip up.
Chocolate Dipped Clementines make a great snack, beautiful appetizer or garnish for dessert. I served them to our family and some friends as a little pre-game appetizer before the Super Bowl. I think they would go nicely on a plate with a piece of chocolate cake to “fancy” it up.
Here’s the Recipe:
- 5 Clementines – peeled and sectioned
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon shortening
- Sea Salt
Line a cookie sheet or jelly roll pan with waxed paper
Melt chocolate and shortening in top of a double boiler
Dip each section of clementine about 1/2 way up in chocolate
Place the section on the prepared pan and sprinkle with a few grains of salt while chocolate is still wet
When your pan is full, place in refrigerator about 10 minutes to allow chocolate to harden
Lots of Vitamin C and anti-oxidants……and yummy flavor….
Not to mention, Pinterest SUCCESS!

When making cheese in bread crumbs the rule of thumb would be to freeze them for about an hour first then bake them. The mozzarella heats at a very low heat. Provolone is a bit better but most don’t like it. I do a block of cheese. Roll slices in egg and then bread crumbs. Place them on a tray and freeze them. The bake for about 8 minutes or fry them. I’ve always had an issue with pinterest chicken recipes that say bake for 30 minutes. NO way is the chicken done in 30 minutes that is scary and gross! BTW, these clementines look lovely!

Lol!!! I remember that! I agree, cheese in the oven sounds like it may not go well, although you have come up with some pretty yummy lacy cheese things in the oven that everyone likes! Yum! You always know how to come up with something good!
