Shrimp Scampi

Did you know April 29th is NATIONAL SHRIMP SCAMPI DAY?

A few weeks ago I noticed several bloggers posting grilled cheese sandwiches and declaring it was “National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day”.  Really?  So, naturally I decided to “google” it. Sure enough, it was National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day…but I also learned EVERY DAY has a food…literally…every single day of the year has been designated as “National Some Food” Day.  In fact, some days even have more than one!

I also learned that each MONTH has been assigned foods.  For example May is National…

  •  Asparagus Month
  •  Barbeque Month
  • Chocolate Custard Month
  • Egg Month
  • Gazpacho Aficionado Month
  • Hamburger Month
  • Salad Month
  • Salsa Month
  • Strawberry Month

But just in case that’s not quite enough food, each WEEK has an “official” food.  For May we have…

  • Week 1 – Raisin Week
  • Week 2 – Hamburger Week
  • Week 3 – International Pickles Week
  • Week 4 – Frozen Yogurt Week

I must say, I was very impressed with the pickle…He made it internationally!  Just think, in a few weeks, you could join people around the world in celebrating the pickle.

As I began to read over this list I quickly realized it’s quite an extensive list. I do think this is kind of “fun” thing but I do wonder a couple of things…Who comes up with this?  And more importantly….How do I get that job?

I was going to print this list of National Days but seeing it was quite long, I decided only to print April and May. Reading over it, I realized National Shrimp Scampi Day was fast approaching. My daughter and I love Shrimp Scampi and guess what?  I just happened to have a great Scampi recipe and some pictures to go with it!  Not to mention, this is super quick and easy meal ready in under 30 minutes.

Here’s the Recipe:

  • 1 lb peeled shrimp
  • 6 Tbsp butter
  • 1 Tbsp chopped green onion
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 4 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp parsley (optional)
  • Tabasco sauce to taste (optional) *Coupon on sidebar*

Shrimp Scampi

In frying pan, melt butter and stir in onion, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and salt

Cook over medium heat until it boils

Add shrimp and cook, stirring occasionally until they turn pink (about 5 min)

Blend in Tabasco and parsley (if using)

Shrimp Scampi

One pound would probably be enough for two people.

Can be served by itself or over noodles.  We had ours with broccoli and baked potatoes.

I’d love to have that job too. Who wouldn’t like to name food holidays and get paid to do it? My birthday, May 31st, is National Macaroon Day. I still have yet to try one, but it’s a holiday so I may have to try and find some. I’m stopping by from Let’s Get Real Link Party. This is a great recipe. I’m pinning it to try later. Thanks for joining us this week.

Great Alison. If you try it, I’d love to hear how it turns out. I often wonder if my recipes turn out the same for others as they do for me. Thanks for stopping by.

I had no idea that there was a month or a day for a specific food. I’m about to go search and see. I’m curious to find out what food is represented on my birth month and date. The shrimp scampi looks absolutely delicious. I have never made it so I will have to bookmark this recipe to refer back to it. Thanks for sharing. I found your blog through the Southern Girl Blog #tribedare.
